Digitalisation of Value Chains in the Retail Sector

Research project funded by Hans-Böckler-Stiftung

Project lead: Prof. Dr. Martina Sproll

Project description

The growth of online retail, digital supply chain management systems and new production technologies are transforming the structure and management of global retail value chains. This has implications for the relationships between companies at the various stages of the value chains, as well as their geographical configuration. As digital technologies contribute to a new form of integration within value chains, trade union and workplace advocacy must increasingly take into account restructuring across the entire value chain (i.e. the production, logistics and retail stages) in order to understand the impact of digital technologies on work and production processes and the associated inequalities, including Germany. This raises fundamental questions regarding a cross-border reorientation of workplace and trade union advocacy in order to help shape the digital transformation.
